Glass & Glass' Maintenance and Care for Architectural / Artistic Glass

For best results and to maximize the performance of the Architectural/Artistic Glass, it is suggested to reapply a sealing to the glass once a year or as required, which will maximize the long life protection of your glass. This service is offered by Glass And Glass at an additional cost,

If your decorative/artistic glass is exposed to the environment, it is recommended that you clean your decorative glass twice as frequently or as required.

For architectural glass that has satin process, if grease or stain gets to the satin, glass must be treated with alcohol and plenty of water. If there is any re-seal to be done after stain is taken off, please contact us for further instructions.

DO NOT USE any abrasive scouring powders or pads, highly acidic / alkaline cleaners or sharp instruments to clean your artistic Glass. These can permanently damage the glass. Avoid Glass Cleaners with ammonia. Never use commercial strength cleaners or products on Glass.

An effective and inexpensive glass cleaner that will not harm the artistic Glass is a simple mixture of 80% water and 20% vinegar. Place mixture in a spray bottle, apply to glass and wipe clean.

Ammonia Free “CRL Sprayway” can also be used and is found on supermarkets.

(The durability of the special protection may be affected by harshness of the environment and the type of cleaning compounds and methhods used. Such matters are outside the control of the manufacturer).

Glass & Glass' Maintenance and Care for POLISHED AND BRUSHED STAINLESS STEEL  Railing Systems.

These guidelines are to give building owners, developers and facility managers advice on efficient, cost- effective cleaning that will allow them to take advantage of the corrosion resistant properties of GLASS & GLASS' Flextech stainless steel railing systems.

Stainless steel railings are corrosion resistant because the alloying elements in stainless form a thin, transparent "passive layer" on the surface. Although this protective passive layer is only a few atoms thick, it instantaneously reforms in the presence of oxygen from air or water, so even if the material is scratched or damaged the passive layer continues protecting the surface from corrosion.

Interior POLISHED Stainless Steel:

1.Introduction

Areas of the polished stainless steel surfaces that come into human contact will produce fingerprints due to salts and oils in skin. Routine maintenance, including cleaning and polishing are required in order to maintain the brilliance and rich luster of the mirror-polished surfaces.

2. Handling

Stainless steel is an extremely hard material but CAN be scratched. Maintenance helpers should take care to avoid surface scratching by removing all rings, watches, or other jewelry items prior to handling polished stainless steel. Disposable latex gloves are recommended during handling and cleaning. Most alloys of stainless steel are not highly reactive to chemicals. However, caution must be exercised when using cleansers, polishes, and waxes on stainless steel products.

3. PRODUCTS TO AVOID

3a. Any cleaning and polishing products that are abrasive or contain harsh chemicals such as ammonia or chlorine should be avoided. These include:

i.       Brasso, Semichrome, or any other commercially available metal polishes or creams.

ii.    Windex, Formula 409, and all ammonia-based products (produces streaks)

iii.   Degreasing agents, powdered cleansers, paint thinners, or harsh solvents

iv.   Furniture polish or paste waxes

3b. Any cleaning towels that are abrasive must be avoided. These include:

i.        Paper towels of ANY kind

ii.        Commercial Terrycloth, linen, or cotton rags / towels (no matter how "soft" they feel to the touch)

iii.        Avoid squeegees, sponges, or any type of scouring pad

iv.        Avoid razor blades, scrapers, putty knives, etc.

4. Recommended Cleaning Products:

The following products are recommended for the cleaning of stainless steel doors and frames:

CLEANER: Sprayway® brand glass cleaner may be used to clean stainless steel when utilized in conjunction with a soft microfiber cleaning cloth. All dust and debris should be blown (not wiped) from stainless surfaces prior to cleaning.

Liberally apply Sprayway® glass cleaner to the entire surface of the microfiber cloth (both sides), and gently wipe over the stainless surfaces. Immediately follow (dry) with a microfiber cloth.

Accept No Substitutes! Unlike other glass cleaners, Sprayway® contains no harsh chemicals or ammonia, and is "streak-free." It is available at professional glass shops.

MICROFIBER CLEANING TOWELS:

Microfiber Cleaning Towels: Utilize ONLY microfiber towels when cleaning or polishing stainless steel. Be sure to remove the paper label from each towel prior to use to avoid scratching.

Microfiber towels may be washed after use, but chemicals in detergent may produce streaks.

Microfiber towels are available nationwide at Ace Hardware stores, as well as most Costco stores (best price). Towels are also available at most auto detailing outlets.

5. Other Important Information

After years of heavy use, neglect, or damage (i.e. scratches, rub marks, etc.), you may wish to have your stainless steel re-polished by a professional. This service is offered by Glass & Glass at an additional cost.

Our Care & Maintenance Guides are prepared as tools designed to inform our customers of techniques that relate to the post-delivery care of our products. It is our goal to help you make informed decisions when designing, specifying, ordering, installing, or maintaining Flextech products.

Interior BRUSHED Stainless Steel:

1. Introduction

Routine maintenance and cleaning is needed to keep stainless steel surfaces in good condition so that the aesthetic appearance and corrosion resistance are not compromised.

2. Maintenance instructions:

a.            General cleaning to remove finger prints and other marks generated from daily use of railings:

i.              Frequency - As needed (clean metal when it is dirty in order to restore its original appearance).

ii.            Mild soap and water or glass cleaner and a clean cotton cloth or chamois - dry completely

b.            Cleaning to remove oil, grease or residue left from other cleaning materials, i.e. floor cleaning or polishing detergents

i.              Frequency - It is important to remove residue from other cleaning materials as soon as possible

ii.            Use alcohol based products, including methylated spirit and isopropyl alcohol or other solvents such as acetone. Apply cleaning solvent several times with a clean, non- scratching cotton cloth until all traces of the partially dissolved oil/grease/residue are removed. Use Scotch Brite if needed. Rinse the area well with mild soap and water and dry completely.

c.            Cleaning to remove paint or graffiti:

i.              Frequency - As needed (clean metal when it is dirty in order to restore its original appearance).

ii.                  Paint and graffiti can be treated with proprietary alkaline or solvent-based paint strippers. Apply cleaning solvent several times with a clean, non-scratching cotton cloth until all traces of the paint is removed. Use Scotch Brite if needed. Rinse the area well with mild soap and water and dry completely.

3. DO NOT USE:

a.            Chloride-containing cleansers, especially those containing hydrochloric acid or bleach

b.            Hypochlorite bleaches; if applied accidentally or spilt on stainless steel surfaces, should be rinsed off immediately with liberal amounts of fresh water

c.         Muriatic acid (commonly used to clean up tile/concrete installations

d.        Silver-cleaners

e.         Scouring powers

f.             Hard scrapers or knives

g.        Non-stainless steel based scouring pads, cleaning wool or wire brushes

h.        To avoid "cross-contamination" from iron particles, ensure that cleaning utensils have not been used for "ordinary" (i.e. carbon) steel before.

Exterior BRUSHED Stainless Steel:

1.    Introduction:

Stainless steel railings are very resistant to rust, however this does not mean that they are impervious to it. Stainless steel railings located outdoors must be kept clean from the contaminants indigenous to the environments they are installed in. Specific maintenance considerations should be given during routine cleaning to ensure that accumulation of contaminants are removed in marine atmospheres, environments laden with industrial pollutants, areas that are exposed to salt spray from road de-icing salt and/or atmospheric dirt and traffic film.

2.    Maintenance instructions:

a.            General cleaning to remove finger prints and other marks generated from daily use of railings:

i.                Frequency - As needed

ii.                Mild soap and water or Glass cleaner and a clean cotton cloth or chamois - dry completely

b.            Cleaning to remove oil, grease or residue left from other cleaning materials, i.e. floor cleaning or polishing detergents:

i.    Frequency -It is important to remove residue from other cleaning materials as soon as possible

ii.            Use alcohol based products, including methylated spirit and isopropyl alcohol or other solvents such as acetone. These products are not a corrosion hazard to stainless steel. Apply cleaning solvent several times with a clean, non-scratching cotton cloth until all traces of the partially dissolved oil/grease/residue are removed. Use Scotch Brite if needed. Rinse the area well with mild soap and water and dry completely.

c.      Cleaning to remove paint or graffiti:

i.               Frequency - As needed

ii.            Paint and graffiti can be treated with proprietary alkaline or solvent-based paint strippers. Apply cleaning solvent several times with a clean, non-scratching cotton cloth, until all traces of the paint is removed. Use Scotch Brite if needed. Rinse the area well with mild soap and water and dry completely.

d.       Stains caused by exposure to marine or de-ice salt, industrial atmospheres or traffic film contamination. All can cause brown staining to appear or the appearance of crystalized salt.

i.              Frequency - Dependent upon the severity of soiling and deposit build up, the maintenance schedule should be altered to meet the needs of the environmental condition.

ii.             Use a clean cotton cloth with a proprietary stainless steel cleaner containing phosphoric acid to remove contamination. After contamination is removed, rinse with mild soap and water and dry completely. Use Scotch Brite if needed. It is advisable that the entire surface of the railing is treated so that a patchy appearance is avoided.

3. DO NOT USE:

a.            Chloride-containing cleansers, especially those containing hydrochloric acid or bleach

b.        Hypochlorite bleaches; if applied accidentally or spilt on stainless steel surfaces, should be
rinsed off immediately with liberal amounts of fresh water

c.        Muriatic acid (commonly used to clean up tile/concrete installations

d.       Silver-cleaners

e.       Scouring powers

f.        Hard scrapers or knives

g.       Non-stainless steel based scouring pads, cleaning wool or wire brushes

h. To avoid "cross-contamination" from iron particles, ensure that cleaning utensils have not been used for "ordinary" (i.e. carbon) steel before.

Before commencing any maintenance task, ensure that you have received the appropriate health and safety literature from the supplier and fully understand it. If in doubt, seek further advice.
